Here is the front page of YouTube’s site.

What is on this page?

  • Large space at the top for an advert
  • Buttons to sign in or create an account
  • On the left you can see the videos that are recommended for me. This is based on what I have watched in the past.
  • On the right there is a menu of icons. These icons are indexes because when you click on one it loads a page of videos about that subject.
  • There is a section to catch up on the latest TV.
  • There is a section called Spotlight.
  • There is a section called Features.

What am I looking at?

This page shows a video by one of YouTube’s partners. Her name is Xsparkage. The video is a make-up tutorial.

What is on this page?

  • Subscribe button – click this to be notified when Xsparkage brings out a new video.
  • Like button – click this if you want to show you like something.
  • Favourite button – When you click this a video will show up on your account page so your friends can see what you enjoy watching the most.
  • Down the right hand side are a list of videos that are related to this one.
  • There are comments from users giving their opinion on the video. You can thumb up or down each comment to show if you agree or disagree.
  • Share button – you can click this to share the video with your friends.
  • Flag as inappropriate button – this alerts YouTube that you feel a video is in violation of the Terms of Use. This means the staff will review it and it may be removed.

Why do people like to use YouTube?

  • Fast and easy to use.
  • Can be used on mobile phones.
  • You can search to find a video YOU want to see, WHEN you want to see it.
  • You can learn new skills.
  • You can make friends.
  • You can listen to music.
  • You can see things you would never otherwise see.
  • Gives everyone who has the equipment a chance to show their videos.
  • Its interactive; you can thumb up or down, like, favourite, comment etc.
  • You can share videos you like by clicking the share button. This posts the video on your Facebook profile.
  • You can share videos on Twitter.
  • You can be paid by YouTube for your videos if they are popular enough.

 What is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)?

A VLE is a system that has been set up by many schools and colleges to be a web-based system that integrates aspects of education through a common user interface. The example that I will be referring to here is Moodle, the VLE provided to staff and students of K College.

How are people using this form of digital media?

Mainly to find out information, of which a brief summary is below:

  • The course syllabus and administrative information.
  • A notice board for current information.
  • Resources, both those used in lesson and external resources.
  • Support for communication between people, including forums.

Why do people use this form of digital media?

Educational organisations use VLE as a way of sharing information, and allowing learning to continue when conditions may not be optimal, such as in the winter when snow and ice can cause gridlock. They can also receive feedback through the forms of communication provided.

Students using VLE’s can access resources wherever and whenever, as long as they have access to the Internet, meaning they should have better opportunities to learn. It also means students can access information at any time, aiding convenience whereas studying in the traditional sense would confine students to a timetable to when they could access information.

The Apple iPhone, a device that has changed digital media as we know it, a device that has so many functions the possibilities truly are endless.

 Why do people use this form of digital media?

There are millions of different applications (Apps) available on the iPhone; there is one to suit all types of people. For teenagers who wish to communicate with friends, there are social media apps, for businessmen they can access their emails through email apps and of course for those who want to have fun there are the millions of game apps. These are just to name a few, but the iPhone can even allow you to read the morning newspaper on the train, keep in contact with friends and family using, view train times and even give you directions to the exact platform you need. 

How are people using this form of digital media?

The iPhone was one of the first devices to support a touchscreen; this helped make it a very popular device in the media world as well as for consumers. Other phones followed suit and touchscreen is now one of the desirable features in a phone. Of course the basic functions that are expected in a phone are available on the iPhone, you can call, text, however the technology inside is far from basic. People enjoy using the iPhone as it has something to keep you entertained in all situations; you can take funny pictures with your friends, you can play a game on the journey home, perhaps read up on the latest news or read a bestseller. iPhone owners are very proud to have the iPhone because of what it says about the person, it’s as much of a fashion statement as it is a phone.

I am looking into the role of social networking (in particular Facebook) in digital. I will focus on Facebook and how it aids not only social interaction and sharing, but also how it and other social networking sites have changed the way companies advertise. Alongside this I will also briefly look into the different platforms we use to access Facebook. 

Why do people use this form of digital media?

In the past five years Facebook has played a big part in how digital media has affected our lives and how we access media, share information and interact socially. It has also helped change the way companies advertise. For example, snack company graze rely almost entirely on ‘word of mouth’ advertisement largely through social media platform rather than on traditional methods of advertisement.

How are people using this form of digital media?

Almost 900 million people and companies use facebook regularly to update friends, families, fans, customers etc. Facebook also gives its users the ability to share social updates on activities, such as letting friends know what you’re watching or what news articles you’ve been reading as well as offering friends the opportunity to join in with games and competitions.

Facebook is also accessible from the majority of smartphones and tablets such as HTC via Android and the iPad through Facebook APPS which enable users to access it via different platforms. This means we can update statuses, share photos, join groups etc. from almost anywhere in the world.

Facebook has ushered in a new era of communication through digital media, allowing us to share information and social updates as well as events and groups to hundreds (or millions) of people worldwide in a matter of seconds.

Digital Media – Internet Forums case study:   Hannah Stevens

Why do people use this form of digital media?

Internet Forums are a highly social form of digital media, allowing users to hold conversations using posted messages. This differs from products of a similar nature such as instant messengers, as the posts, coined by users as ‘threads’, are often archived, though the length of this is down to the forum admin’s discretion. The user interface of forums rarely stray from a page of sub-forums, which lead to a page of corresponding threads. These are often limited to a small pallet of colours, with use of a very inoffensive and clear typeface. When a user creates a thread however, they are able to use HTML/CSS within the body, free to make the post as garish or simple as they would like.

How are people using this form of digital media?

If an individual is interested in a subject, they are likely to visit a forum full of like-minded people, and the forum can become a ‘community’, used as a social platform of discussion for fandoms, professions, etcetera. Alternatively, a forum can provide a searchable reference for an issue. This produces a secondary use for forums, a public document to help those with problems, be them technological or otherwise. Although one cannot tell who is behind the keyboard of the posts and replies, there is a large degree of trust in solutions generated by users due to the assumption that if they are using that particular forum, they are likely to have knowledge in the subject area.

Forums are generally web-based, however the use of conversion is apparent as “mobile” sites designed to be far more aesthetically pleasing and touch-screen friendly have been developed for users with smartphones. Building upon this, apps have been developed specifically for forums. Some have been developed for users of particular forums, such as ‘eFestivals’ forums. There are also apps developed, such as ‘Tapatalk’, which allow their users to condense and view the forums they visit regularly into one app and allow you to view them with ease.

Blogging is growing more and more popular every day now that there are more websites to publish on; Tumblr, BlogSpot, WordPress etc. Each of these is a form of a blogging interface.

 How are people using this form of digital media?

BlogSpot is the more popular way – in my opinion – of blogging as it is extremely easy to use and there are certain features that enable you to design your blog. Because of this posts are easier to make, and people can even upload pictures. There are variations on how often people post as some post daily yet others weekly or monthly. Blogging, to them, is a form of communication to the Internet world and can even help them with their hobbies (e.g. by launching an art blog).

To make a post you just click “New Post” and then enter the title name and write your post, and then you’ll just need to click “Publish” and you’re done! On your dashboard you can check updates from the blogs you read. There are also different features on your dashboard such as the comments page, stats, settings, design, edit post, new post and monetise.

Apart from making posts you can “follow” other blogs on which you can regularly see any updates they post. You can also make comments on their blog posts, which can attract more people to your blog, as they would see you commenting on others. This would gain you more followers, and the more followers you have the more comments you receive. This is great on blogs that advertise your own business, which is why people like artists sign up on it to help promote their artwork and gain commissions.

Why do people use this form of digital media?

Another reason why people create blogs is to meet other people with similar interests. It is a form of communication between you and your audience to showcase your interests and daily life. You’re stepping out of your comfort zone in order to experiment with different hobbies, and then post your experiences. People can then comment with their opinions, and if they match similar interests you can then grow a connection with them and become friends… Normally when I blog I post my daily outfits and my makeup shots, alongside any recent updates in life. I get feedback from my followers and most of the time it’s the same number of followers that have become my friends through my blog.
